Our Interpersonal Therapy Approach

BestQuest Wellness has developed a fresh, interpersonal approach to clinical counselling. With an emphasis on emotional expression, honesty, trust, and communication, the relationship (therapeutic alliance) between client and counsellor is used as a kind of boat to arrive at insight and clarity; this is then applied to meet your goals. 

 We feel that that clients benefit from self-determination, so we don’t make presumptions at the first session about how your therapy will play out, or label you based on what you share in the first session. Instead, we position you as an educator to the therapist, rather than a helpless patient. In this way, treatment planning can be a collaboration: The therapist’s training and expertise in conjunction with the life experiences and intuition of the client.
 
Here are some specific ways BestQuest positions the client as a collaborator:
  • We get you to tell us about your goals and the ways you want to pursue them.
  • We start with a comprehensive holistic wellness assessment, and you get to specify which areas you’d like to revisit in future sessions.
  • We’ll offer you choices regarding the approaches and techniques used, and have you tell us what works and doesn’t.
  • Upon request, we provide you with information on success rates, pros and cons, and examples of different therapeutic approaches, to assist your decision-making. 
  • Opportunities for self-directed growth between sessions: Upon request and where ethical, we’ll provide resources to help you understand your brain, develop a meditation practice, or develop more self-awareness (what you learn can be explored in future sessions).
  • We’ll ask for honest feedback after every session. This can be done verbally to your therapist, or online in your own time using a session rating scale. Regular feedback is always used to optimize treatment trajectory, even when client’s choose not to specify any specific changes they’d like. 
  • Flexibility for different session times/venues: Weekday/Sunday, AM/PM/evenings, in-person or online.
  • Flexible session timing: Where clinically appropriate and beneficial, session length and frequency can be adapted to your needs.
